You can stockpile a few to use on demand, which adds a welcome, if superficial layer of tension. It never regenerates, only replenished by health packs scattered around the level or thrown to you by a squadmate. Things are different in the return to 1940s Europe, but by small degrees.įor the campaign only, the health system returns to the original Call of Duty's finite life bar. To my surprise, it wraps with one of the quieter (still loud) endings I've seen in a Call of Duty game. Starting with the iconic and obligatory landing at Normandy, you shoot your way through the Western Front, liberating Paris, crossing the Rhine, and taking part in the Battle of the Bulge.

You play as Daniels, a US soldier and member of the 1st Infantry Division. This is another Call of Duty campaign, replete with slow crawl concussion scenes, cornfed soldiers, and angry COs. This isn't the powerful history lesson for future generations it was first billed as. I'm not surprised Call of Duty always flubs the grandiose promises made by its marketing. It turns a global catastrophe into a melodramatic test of camaraderie, more concerned with making you feel cool than bogging anyone down with historical context. You can create private matches with bots, too, if playing against others with only half of a screen is too much of a task. The singleplayer campaign isn't really about WWII anyway, it's about how friendship between adult men requires both great sacrifice and a great aim. It’s not ideal with only half of the screen, but it’s handy when you just want a quick game with a friend or family member. Two players can squad up and engage in match types such as Team Deathmatch, playing together to take down the opposing team. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare does have cross-play, however, so at least everyone doesn’t have to have the game on the same format.įor those who like local co-op, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare does support split-screen play across its multiplayer modes.

That means if you want to play it with friends they each need their own copy of the game and something to play it on, and also maybe an online subscription. The only caveat to Spec Ops mode is that it’s online co-op only. You’ll make your way around numerous large maps, completing objectives as enemies spawn to make your life harder. While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s campaign is strictly single-player only, Spec Ops mode allows four players to team up and take down the bad guys together.
